I recently visited a synagogue in Sedona, Arizona that redefined this song and this prayer for me. If you haven't visited there, Sedona has the most magical and majestic red rock mountains that make it one of the most beautiful places on earth to behold. At the foot of one of these mountains lies the The Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley (jcsvv.org). Capitalizing on their view, the entire front of the sanctuary is glass, allowing congregants to take in the mountain view during prayer. Not surprisingly, they begin each service with "Esa Einai" "I lift up my eyes to the mountains."
I had the experience of playing this melody for the congregants, and was moved to dedicate this piece to their most welcoming community. Praying in their sanctuary defines this Psalm; worshiping with the people of the JCSVV community defines all that is good and welcoming in Judaism. Thank you.
